MEDICAL ABORTIONS
Medical abortion involves the use of 2 different medications, taken 24-48 hours apart. The medications are available on a prescription. The procedure is straight-forward nowadays and can be done by the woman in the privacy of her own home. The success rate is very high with these medications, though there is a small chance that the medications don’t work, or that complications such as excessive bleeding can occur.
How many weeks' pregnant does a women need to be for a medical abortion?
A medical abortion can be performed from as soon as the woman has a pregnancy test to show she is pregnant and can be carried out up to 10 weeks’ gestation (that is, 10 weeks after the first day of the last period). The medications are approved for use in Australia up to 9 weeks, but Dr Darren provides medical abortions up to 10 weeks’ gestation in line with Australian guidelines - up to 10 weeks is also commonly carried out in countries such as the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and the USA.
What tests does the woman need?
Medical abortions can often be carried out with no blood tests at all, though sometimes these are required for safety reasons. An ultrasound scan is usually required to be sure of the dates, but sometimes if the woman is certain of her dates an ultrasound scan is not required.
