HIV & SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTION PREVENTION - PrEP & STI PEP

‘PrEP’ stands for ‘Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis’ and are medications that are taken regularly to prevent HIV infection. The medications are very effective if taken correctly and reduce the risk of acquiring HIV almost to zero.
Tablets can be taken daily, or in many cases, ‘on demand’ - that is, before and after sex. Injectable medications are also becoming available, and these give long-lasting protection against HIV.
In order to access PrEP safely it is important to have blood tests and an STI screen regularly - Dr Darren can arrange this for you and provide prescriptions for PrEP.
‘STI-PEP’ (STI Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a newer concept. The person takes antibiotic tablets as a single dose after sex and this reduces the risk of acquiring infections such as Syphilis, Chlamydia, and Gonorrhoea. This form of PEP does not protect against HIV, however.
